How to Teach a Child Who Won't Sit Still

Movement isn't the enemy of concentration — for a lot of children it's the price of it. What to try when sitting quietly is the hardest part of the lesson.

Some children can sit at a table for forty minutes. Some children cannot, and no amount of reminding, rewarding or removing privileges will change it — because the sitting is not a behaviour choice they're making badly.

If you've spent months in a daily battle over staying in a chair, it's worth considering that the chair might be the wrong hill.

Why can't my child sit still?

For a lot of children, movement is not a distraction from attention. It's part of how they achieve it.

Regulating your body — staying upright, still and quiet — takes effort. For children whose systems don't do that automatically, it takes a great deal of effort, and that effort comes out of the same limited pool they need for thinking. A child forced to spend most of their capacity on sitting has very little left for fractions.

Which produces the pattern parents describe constantly: the harder they concentrate on being still, the less they take in.

Common reasons a child struggles to sit:

  • They're seeking input. Rocking, spinning, leaning, chewing. The body is asking for information about where it is in space, and it won't settle until it gets it.
  • They're managing arousal. Movement is being used to stay alert, or to discharge tension. Fidgeting during hard work is often a sign of engagement, not disengagement.
  • The task is aversive. Difficult or dull work makes the chair unbearable in a way that the same chair isn't during something absorbing.
  • Sitting is genuinely uncomfortable. Low core strength makes staying upright tiring. Some children slump, wrap their legs, or fall off chairs because holding the position is real physical work.

Notice how few of these are solved by asking again more firmly.

Does fidgeting actually help concentration?

For a substantial number of children, yes — and it's worth being precise about why, because "let them fidget" gets dismissed as indulgence.

If a child's system needs a baseline level of input to stay regulated, and they're not getting it, they will go and find it. That search is the distraction: getting up, talking, poking a sibling, sharpening a pencil for the fourth time.

Providing the input deliberately — something to squeeze, a wobble cushion, standing up, chewing gum — often satisfies the need cheaply, in the background, without hijacking the lesson.

The test is simple and empirical: does the fidget compete with the work, or run underneath it? A stress ball squeezed absent-mindedly is running underneath. A spinner being watched is competing. Keep the first kind, lose the second.

What actually helps a child who needs to move?

Shorten the units, not the content. Ten focused minutes beats forty resented ones. Most children who "can't concentrate" can concentrate — just not for the length of a school lesson. Work in short blocks with real movement between them.

Let them move while thinking. Standing, pacing, lying on the floor, sitting backwards on the chair. None of these harm comprehension. Insisting on upright-at-a-desk is a convention, not a requirement.

Front-load movement. Ten minutes of something genuinely physical before a demanding task, not as a reward after it. Many children settle far better having already spent something.

Make the learning itself physical where you can. Pace while reciting. Act out the sequence. Build the model. Walk the number line. Movement and content in the same activity means no competition between them.

Give the hands a job. If the hands are occupied harmlessly, the attention often stays put.

Watch when it's worst. Track it for a week. If it's always late morning, or always maths, or always after a bad night, you've learned something more useful than a general struggle with focus.

Is this ADHD?

It might be, and it might not — plenty of children who can't sit still don't have ADHD, and plenty of children with ADHD sit perfectly still and attend to nothing at all.

Things that make it worth seeking an assessment:

  • It shows up everywhere, not just during schoolwork
  • It's markedly out of step with children of the same age
  • It's affecting friendships, sleep or self-esteem, not just productivity
  • It's persistent over months rather than tied to a rough patch

But the strategies above don't require a diagnosis. They're just good teaching for a child who needs to move, and they're worth doing regardless of what any assessment eventually says.

What if school won't accommodate it?

Schools vary enormously, and a class of thirty imposes real constraints — it's worth going in acknowledging that rather than assuming bad faith.

What tends to work:

Ask for something specific and small. "Could he have a wobble cushion and permission to stand at the back when he needs to?" is far more likely to succeed than "he needs more movement."

Bring evidence, not adjectives. "He completes roughly twice as much when he's allowed to stand" is hard to argue with.

Talk to the SENCo, not only the class teacher. They know what's available and what's already in place for others.

Ask what they're already seeing. Sometimes school reports no problem at all — which is informative, and worth understanding rather than disputing.
