Dyslexia-Friendly Learning at Home
What actually helps a dyslexic child learn — beyond coloured overlays and reading more. Practical changes, what the evidence supports, and what to stop doing.
Dyslexia is one of the most researched learning differences there is, and also one of the most surrounded by products that don't work. Parents get pushed towards coloured overlays, tinted glasses, eye exercises and brain-training apps, most of which have weak or no evidence behind them.
What does work is less commercial and more boring. Here it is.
What is dyslexia, actually?
At its core, dyslexia is a difficulty with the phonological components of language — hearing, holding and manipulating the individual sounds in words. That makes mapping sounds to letters effortful, which makes decoding slow, which consumes the capacity that should be going on comprehension.
Some things it is not:
- Not seeing letters backwards. Reversals are common in all young children and aren't the defining feature.
- Not a visual problem. This is why overlays and tinted lenses have such thin evidence — they target the wrong mechanism.
- Not related to intelligence. Dyslexia occurs across the full range of ability.
- Not laziness or inattention, though it's frequently mistaken for both.
The practical consequence: reading is effortful, not impossible. A dyslexic child can read — it just costs them far more per page, and that cost is what shapes everything else.
What actually helps a dyslexic child read?
The strongest evidence sits with structured literacy — explicit, systematic, cumulative teaching of the sound-letter system. Not learning words by shape, not guessing from pictures or context, but direct instruction in how the code works, practised to fluency.
The features that matter:
Explicit. Every rule is taught directly rather than inferred. Dyslexic children rarely absorb patterns incidentally the way other readers do.
Systematic and cumulative. A defined sequence, each step building on the last, nothing assumed.
Multisensory. Seeing, saying, hearing and writing the same thing together. This is the one piece of the "multisensory" idea with real support behind it — not because of learning styles, but because it strengthens the sound-symbol link from several directions.
Lots of repetition. Far more than feels necessary. A typical reader might need a handful of exposures; a dyslexic child may need many times that, and needing them is not a sign it isn't working.
Practised to fluency, not just accuracy. Getting a word right slowly isn't the finish line. Automaticity is what frees up capacity for meaning.
What should I stop doing?
Stop asking them to read aloud to prove they can. It's the highest-cost, highest-shame version of the task. Read together, take turns, or read to them.
Stop treating reading volume as the fix. "Just read more" assumes the mechanism works and needs mileage. If decoding is broken, more reading is more failure.
Stop making them guess from context. It's a coping strategy that masks the underlying gap and gets less viable as text gets harder.
Stop buying the visual products. Overlays and tinted lenses have persistently weak evidence. If your child genuinely prefers one, fine — but don't let it substitute for structured literacy.
Stop conflating reading with knowing. This is the big one, and it's the theme of everything below.
How do I stop reading difficulty limiting everything else?
This matters more than any reading intervention, because the secondary damage is usually larger than the primary difficulty.
A dyslexic child who has to read to access history, science and maths problems will underperform in all of them — not because they can't do history, but because the door to it is locked. Over years, they conclude they're bad at everything.
Separate the two ruthlessly:
Audiobooks are reading. For comprehension, vocabulary and knowledge, listening does the job. Use them for content while you work on decoding separately. This isn't cheating; it's not letting one bottleneck strangle everything.
Read the maths problem aloud. A word problem tests reading and maths simultaneously. Remove the first and you find out about the second.
Let them show knowledge without writing. Verbally, by building, by explaining. Spelling difficulty shouldn't cost marks in science.
Use text-to-speech and speech-to-text. These are legitimate tools, not crutches, and they're how a great many dyslexic adults work perfectly successfully.
Keep the knowledge growing while the reading catches up. Otherwise you get a child who's behind in reading and behind in everything reading gives access to — and the second gap is much harder to close.
Should I get a formal assessment?
It's worth pursuing, though be clear about what it does and doesn't get you.
An assessment gives you a clearer picture of the specific profile — where the difficulty sits, what's strong, what needs targeting. It can unlock exam access arrangements, which matter enormously later. And it often changes how a child sees themselves, from "stupid" to "has a specific thing that has a name."
What it doesn't do is automatically produce support. And you don't need it to start: everything in this article is worth doing regardless of whether a diagnosis ever arrives.
Routes are the school SENCo, or a private educational psychologist or specialist assessor. Waiting lists are long, so start early if you're going to.

What about spelling?
Spelling usually lags reading, often by a lot, and often permanently. Many fluent dyslexic adults still spell unreliably.
Be pragmatic. Teach spelling properly, but don't let it dominate, and don't correct it during drafting — stopping to worry about a word mid-thought is precisely what breaks the thread. Fix spelling on a separate pass, or with a spellchecker, as an adult would.
And separate your feedback. "That's a strong argument, let's tidy the spelling after" tells the truth about both things, which is far better than a page returned covered in red.
How does Skoolio work for a dyslexic learner?
The main thing is that reading isn't the only door.
A child can take in a concept by being taught it, by discovering it, by building something, by arguing about it — and can demonstrate mastery by explaining it back rather than by writing it down. That breaks the pattern where a decoding difficulty quietly depresses performance in every subject at once.
Because progress is mastery-based rather than graded, a child working below age level in reading isn't capped elsewhere. They can be well ahead in reasoning while consolidating literacy, and neither gets flagged as a problem.
