How to Choose an Online Learning Platform for Your Child

The questions worth asking before you subscribe to anything — including the ones that reveal whether a platform actually teaches or just tests.

Most families buy the wrong thing first. That's not a criticism — it's structural. You buy before you know what your child actually needs, because you're anxious and you want to be doing something.

The fix is to work out what problem you're solving before you look at any product, including ours.

What problem am I actually trying to solve?

Be specific, because the right product differs completely.

"There's a specific gap." Your child missed a chunk of maths and needs to fill it. You need targeted practice, not a whole system. Khan Academy is free and excellent for this. Don't buy a subscription.

"I don't know what to teach next." Sequencing and coverage. You need something curriculum-aligned that tracks what's been done.

"They understand it but won't engage." Motivation, not content. More worksheets will not help. You need something that changes the format or connects to what they care about.

"They're stuck and I can't explain it." You need a different explanation, or a human. Sometimes a tutor is the honest answer.

"They're bored and unchallenged." You need something that moves at their pace without a ceiling.

"They can't cope with school at all." You need something that doesn't feel like school, and possibly a bigger conversation than a subscription.

Write down which of these you're solving. The list below then does most of the work for you.

What questions should I ask about any platform?

Does it adapt, or just record? Many "adaptive" products only track completion and unlock the next thing. Real adaptation changes what happens next based on what the child did. Ask what specifically changes.

Does it adapt difficulty, or approach? Most adapt difficulty only. If your child's problem is that the format doesn't reach them, an easier version of the same format won't help.

What happens when they get it wrong? The most revealing question. Does it explain differently, or repeat the same explanation? Does it go back to the prerequisite, or push on?

Is the reward connected to the learning? In good design, succeeding at the thing is the reward. In bad design, the maths is a toll paid to reach the character customisation. Children optimise for the reward — if it's detached, they'll learn to minimise the learning.

Can they explain what they learned? Try a free trial and then ask your child to teach you something from it. If they can't after several hours, it wasn't teaching.

What does it tell you as a parent? A percentage is nearly useless. "Place value isn't secure" tells you what to do on Tuesday.

Which curriculum? A US-aligned product will use different vocabulary, different year framing, and different content order. Fine for maths concepts; awkward for anything else.

Can they stop easily? Anything engineered to be hard to leave is optimising for time-on-site, which is not the same as learning.

What are the warning signs?

Engagement mechanics that outweigh the learning. Streaks, timers and loss-aversion pressure produce compliance and anxiety rather than understanding. A streak your child is frightened to break is not motivation.

Claims about learning styles. "We identify your child's learning style and match teaching to it" is built on a theory that hasn't held up in testing. It signals marketing over evidence.

Levels that only go up. If nothing ever revisits, retention isn't being handled — and forgetting is the default behaviour of memory.

No way to go backwards. If a child can't drop to an earlier concept, gaps can't be fixed, and gaps are usually the actual problem.

Time-on-app as the headline metric. Measuring the wrong thing, and usually optimising for it too.

Vague "AI-powered." Ask what it does. If nobody can answer concretely, it's decoration.

How do I test a platform properly?

Two weeks, and watch rather than read the marketing.

Watch them use it, twice. Are they thinking, or clicking through? You'll know within ten minutes.

Check how they come off it. Chatty and wanting to show you something, or flat and irritable? This tells you what it actually did.

Ask them to teach you something from it. The real test of whether anything went in.

Deliberately get things wrong. Sit with them and answer badly on purpose. Watch what the system does. This is the single most informative thing you can do, and almost nobody does it.

Check the parent view after a week. Does it tell you something you didn't know? Or just how long they spent?

Ask your child what they think. They'll tell you whether it's boring with unusual honesty.

Do I need to pay for anything at all?

Genuinely, no — and any article on this subject that doesn't say so is selling you something.

Khan Academy is free and outstanding, particularly for maths. Oak National Academy is free and UK-curriculum-aligned. BBC Bitesize is free. The library is free. A family using only these is not disadvantaged.

Paying is worth it when you're buying one of three things: time (someone else sequences it), adaptation (something changes based on your child rather than you spotting it), or insight (you learn something about your child you couldn't see yourself).

If a paid product isn't giving you at least one of those, you're paying for content you could get free.

Where does Skoolio fit?

Skoolio is worth paying for if your problem is one of these: your child has been switched off by being taught one way, you want to know what they actually understand rather than what they scored, or you're home educating and need coverage tracked without building a curriculum yourself.
